in the Central East ATTC region. Similar to the other sections within
the NIDA/CSAT initiative, this section is truly a work in progress. It
does not necessarily represent a complete listing of addiction research
centers in the region.

Delaware
University of Delaware Center for Drug and Alcohol Studies (CDAS)

The Center for Drug and Alcohol Studies was established at the University
of Delaware in 1991 to facilitate collaborative research and publishing
on substance abuse among social and behavioral science faculty, professional
staff, and students. Administratively housed in the University's Department
of Sociology and Criminal Justice, the Center is funded entirely through
sponsored research grants and contracts. The principal mission of the
Center for Drug and Alcohol Studies is the production, dissemination,
and utilization of scientific knowledge in two broad areas:
- the etiology, patterns and consequences, and prevention and treatment
of drug and alcohol abuse; and
- the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases,
and the prevention of HIV disease among high-risk populations.

Howard University Center for Drug Abuse Research (CDAR)

It is the mission of the Howard University Center for Drug Abuse Research
to increase the body of knowledge related to prevention of drug abuse
among African Americans. As a part of this mission, the Howard University
CDAR is a repository and a resource in the area of drug abuse research
on African Americans with specific focus in the thematic area of epidemiology
and prevention among African Americans from the prenatal period through
adolescence.
Maryland
University of Maryland Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR)

The Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR), at the University of
Maryland at College Park, is dedicated to addressing the problems substance
abuse creates for individuals, families, and communities.
To this end, the mission of CESAR is to inform policymakers, practitioners,
and the general public about substance abuse—its nature and extent, its
prevention and treatment, and its relation to other problems.
In pursuing its mission, CESAR conducts policy-relevant research and
evaluation studies, disseminates statistical and other information, assists
in training students in substance abuse research methods and policy analysis,
and provides technical assistance to agencies and organizations working
in substance abuse related fields.
New Jersey
Princeton University - The Center for the Study of the Brain,
Mind and Behavior

The goal of cognitive neuroscience is to understand how the
physical mechanisms of the brain give rise to the functions of the mind.
The emergence of this new field represents the convergence of two disciplines
that, over the past several decades, have functioned relatively independently
of one another, with neuroscientists focusing on the brain, and psychologists
on the mind.
Rutgers University - The Center of Alcohol Studies (CAS)

This multidisciplinary institute is dedicated to acquisition and dissemination
of knowledge on psychoactive substance use and related phenomena with
primary emphasis on alcohol use and consequences. The Center's broad program
of basic and applied research is conducted by scientists drawn chiefly
from the biological sciences (principally biochemistry and neuropharmacology),
psychology (both clinical and experimental), and sociology.

The faculty and staff
within the Division of Addiction Psychiatry have a broad range of research
interests related to addictions including dual diagnosis, tobacco, cocaine,
alcohol, heroin, behavioral therapy development, psychopharmacology, complementary
medicine, adolescent addiction, cultural research, neuropsychology, and
genetics. National Institute of Health and pharmaceutical grants and contracts
support research aimed at improving treatments for schizophrenia and co-occurring
addiction, cocaine addiction, alcohol dependence, and tobacco dependence.
