ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The Danya Institute maintains the Center for Excellence called the "Center for HIV, Hepatitis, and Addiction Training and Technology" (CHHATT) through its Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center (CEATTC). The goal of CHHATT is to put research findings into practice by bringing new information and resources to community-based prevention and treatment providers. The CEATTC will hold the "Keeping It Real 2004" conference in Washington, DC, September 20-22, 2004 at the Kellogg Conference Hotel at Gallaudet University.

This conference will be the fourth regional conference convened by the CHHATT for outreach workers and substance abuse counselors regarding HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and substance abuse. This conference is markedly different in that we are collaborating more intensely with other private and public funded organizations across the country. Many of the regional ATTCs have committed support through conference planning, presenters and dissemination. The impetus for these regional conferences grew out of several focus groups held by CHHATT workgroup in 2000, with outreach workers and other stakeholders. In 2003, the CHHATT Workgroup was reconvened in order to better facilitate resource development, training and collaboration among those in this specific field of addiction. The majority of issues discussed in the CHHATT Workgroup focus on the consistency of training of outreach workers. Currently, there is a wide variance of training for outreach workers ranging from adequate training to no training. Our goal for this regional conference is to expand on the previous Keeping It Real Conferences. This conference will not only be built around the Outreach Competencies that were developed by the CHHATT (funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, SAMHSA), it will take the next steps in promoting the conversation regarding certification/credentialing of the outreach worker.

The overall goals of the Keeping It Real 2004 Conference are: (1) To provide cutting edge information on addiction and co-infection with HIV and Hepatitis to outreach workers and substance abuse counselors; (2) To improve efforts to find and assist hard-to-reach and special populations; (3) Infuse evidence based practices into outreach, and (4) To improve prevention of co-infection through knowledge dissemination activities including conferences and post-conference products.
